Chang Yu

Chang Yu (1895-1966), whose real name was Youshu, was a native of Nanchong, Sichuan Province. Born into a wealthy family, he studied painting with his father, Chang Shufang, and calligraphy with the famous Zhao Xi. In 1919, he traveled to Japan to study, and in 1921, inspired by Cai Yuanpei's call for "hard work and thrift study" to stay in France, he went to Paris to study art with the assistance of his eldest brother, Chang Junmin, and began his career in France. Unlike his contemporaries, such as Xu Beihong and Lin Fengmian, who studied in France, Chang Yu did not return to his home country after his studies, but chose to stay in Paris for the rest of his life, becoming one of the very few Chinese representatives of the Paris School of Painting in the 1920s.
